Switching from Google Home to Apple HomeKit: A costly, privacy-centric change Internet of Things news and analysis

"You need a special type of Thread device that can kind of bridge between Wi-Fi and Thread, right, to provide that connectivity." That's where Thread connection points come in. Historically, Apple's digital voice assistant Siri hasn't worked well with devices made by Google. According to Google, soon Nest thermostats will be compatible with competing smart home ecosystems like Apple HomeKit. "If you're high risk, then you might be a candidate for interventions, for example, like Paxlovid," Sutton said.

It’s just a notion and no one has ever yet provided a valid reason, other than “oh, but it’s not right for a company to know your business”. All you’ll get by switching to Apple is a lack of assistance due to the privacy thing. But, I do agree that I wish Apple had some sort of smart display. I still have some Echo’s around, including a Show 5. But, they will be phased out in our house with HomePod minis as time allows. I do not like the privacy side of Alexa either.

Minimal Configuration

The camera offers a wide 160-degree view that covers a wide range of angles so that you see everything happening outside your front door. Entities exposed as TelevisionMediaPlayer are controllable within the Apple Remote widget in Control Center. Play, pause, volume up and volume down should work out of the box depending on the supported_featuresof the entity. The HomeKit Accessory Protocol Specification only allows a maximum of 150 unique accessories per bridge.

The family of Google smart home hardware includes Google Home, Nest Mini, Home Max, Nest Hub and the Nest Hub Max. Apple's signature attention to detail is evident in Siri, but the voice assistant is plagued by a slow pace of innovation. However, you'll enjoy seamless integration with a large array of Google branded smart home systems. Google home integrates easily with smart gadgets like Chromecast, Nest Cam, and the Nest Doorbell. I’ve performed some early compatibility tests and so far, it looks like they can coexist.

The hub is what will talk to all of your other smart home devices. The doorbell offers PIR motion detection and ICR Night Vision so that your house never stays unguarded. Video alerts are sent in the format of 720p videos that capture every detail when someone approaches your front door. It also allows two-way audio and a battery-lock feature for the convenience of the user.

Smart speakers anchor your smart device ecosystem, enabling your smart devices from different manufacturers to connect and interact with each other. Still, any of my current connected devices that work with HOOBS would let me replace devices over a longer time period. Or I could simply just rely on HOOBs to add HomeKit support for my supported devices and not replace them at all. Generally speaking, Google Assistant is considered to be the best digital assistant out there. For starters, it's excellent at understanding what people are saying, and misunderstands a small fraction of the time. It also offers more features than the other two, and sounds more natural in the process.

HomeKit also offers the most comprehensive smart home automation options and the best app interface. The smart home is getting increasingly popular. These days it's easy to buy a smart version of nearly any tech product or appliance you can imagine, from thermostats and light bulbs to security cameras and sensors. With smart connectivity, you can control all of these varied devices from a mobile app or even through voice commands. Ultimately, Alexa is still the king when it comes to smart home compatibility, however Google is in a close second — and you'll still find a good assortment of devices for Apple's HomeKit. If you're setting up a new smart home, which ecosystem should you work with? Ultimately, however, the ecosystem that's right for you will largely depend on what devices you already own. I’ve always said once you give up that data, you’ve completely lost control over how it’s used and by whom. But I’ll be looking to replace at least a dozen bulbs with HomeKit support in the near future. That will cost me a minimum of $20 per bulb, depending on the brand and features.

Just like Apple Home, Google Assistant can be used to operate compatible smart devices and create automation scenes. Google Assistant claims it features more than a million actions, with the caveat that they include all possible queries from both first- and third-party offerings. Google’s expansive apps/actions make it easy to branch out beyond home automation functions, while Homekit is more stunted in this area.

This week we also saw Airversa's upcoming humidifier. It has a clear top and is reminiscent of the Harmon Kardon Soundsticks that used to be on display in nearly every Apple Store. The iOS 16.2 update brings new performance improvements to HomeKit users. Once users started upgrading their home's infrastructure post-update, errors started occurring, similar to ours during the beta process.

H264_omx option is only available with custom FFmpeg builds and enables GPU Hardware acceleration on Raspberry Pi. Audio is disabled unless this flag is set to True. HomeKit will cache the name on the first run so the accessory must be reset for any change to take effect. Aqara's smart sensor reports temperature, humidity, and atmospheric pressure — all in a package you can put just about anywhere. Even though the sensor has a low price, keep in mind that you will need to have an Aqara Hub to add it to HomeKit.

Google works with a huge breadth of connected products, including many—if not most—third-party products. This includes a plethora of TVs, switches, plugs, thermostats, speakers and more. You may use the service homekit.reset_accessory with one or more entity IDs to reset accessories whose configuration may have changed. This can be useful when changing a media player’s device class to tv, linking a battery, or whenever Home Assistant adds support for new HomeKit features to existing entities.

The entity_id of a sensor entity to use as the battery of the accessory. The best HomeKit temperature sensors leverage the power of Apple's smart home ecosystem to do more than just tell you the current temperature in a room. These sensors can work with other devices, enabling genuinely magical automation potential. For example, you can turn on a ceiling fan when the temperature gets too hot or fire up a space heater when it gets chilly. Just like with Lutron, the key to those connections is Philips' Bridge. It connects all of Philips Hue's lighting products to your router, and makes them all accessible to your voice assistant of choice.

When setting up HomeKit from the UI, this avoids the sometimes time-consuming process of deleting and create a new instance. Many smart home devices will work with multiple platforms, but some won’t – and there are important differences between the platforms, the prices and the products available. While these recommendations may seem like a cop out to some, they are our expert recommendations. If you are an Apple aficionado, you’ll be more at home with Apple Homekit products, as you will already most likely own potential controllers and compatible devices. If you’re looking for a system that is less cluttered with “smart home fluff” like trivia game skills or Jurassic Bark and you’re willing to pay the elevated entry cost, then pick Apple. They serve as the nerve center for your smart home automation.

The Starling Hub sounds like a great way to get off of Google Home and migrate to Apple Home Kit without losing my investment in Nest Smoke detectors, locks and thermostat. It sounds like there is a new standard called “Matter” coming late this year or early in 2022 that will let Home Kit, Google Home and Alexa all play well together natively. Different things will work for different people, even in the same home. I was able to add my Wink lights, for example, to HomeKit using HOOBS during my testing, for example. Part of the reason is to offer more HomeKit reviews, tips, and experiences here on the site.
