Following World War II, paperboard manufacturer Container Corporation of America (CCA) established itself as a progressive voice in American industry, adopting cutting-edge attitudes toward design and social responsibility years before the mainstream. Its founder, Walter Paepcke and his wife, Elizabeth, the unfortunately nicknamed “Pussy,” were important tastemakers and patrons of the arts responsible for, among other things, the Aspen Institute and its progeny. CCA’s advertising series “Great Ideas In Western Man” ran in the leading business magazines from the 1950s through the 1970s under the auspices of Herbert Bayer, who Paepcke brought to CCA from the Bauhaus school.

"CHGO DSGN is an exhibition that is inspired by the ideas of our times; it represents a cross section of what I believe is going on in design right now," says Valicenti, founder and design director at Thirst/3st. The show’s exacting and eclectic selection represents the established and up-and-coming across disciplines, while providing space for an array of experimental and theoretical proposals. Among the largest institutions in the world dedicated to art created post-1950, the Museum of Contemporary Art is best known for hosting major touring exhibitions, including past exhibitions celebrating luminaries like Virgil Abloh, David Bowie and Takashi Murakami. As an outdoor venue, The Franklin’s location is essential to its identity and purpose. East Garfield Park is a primarily Black, working-class neighborhood, and because of its low rents many artists have begun to move there. Soto and Sullivan see The Franklin as a way for artists to engage with East Garfield Park residents and build community. As a result, they’ve created a unique space that doesn’t exist within the typical confines of the art world. In Chicago, the museum is a foundational institution, often acting as a place of refuge within a city that has stymied the growth and progress of the African American community through racist housing policies and police conduct. “We weren’t started by anybody downtown; we were started by ordinary folks,” Burroughs shared.
