Premier Cruise Lines, which operated the Big Red Boat, was formed in 1983 by two veterans in the cruise industry. These two men were mavericks who had a vision; they wanted to create a new niche market — Family Cruising. Until that time cruise ships had been opulent floating palaces catering to well-heeled older patrons who wanted a luxurious vacation experience. The two entrepreneurs behind Premier Cruise Lines thought that some of these patrons might like to bring children or grandchildren along with them and that was the niche market they were hoping to capture. During this time the cruise industry began to see changes and the competition for customers was pretty fierce among the cruise lines, especially those designed with families in mind.

Premier purchased the ship in 1985 and set about the task of placing into service the first cruise ship that specifically targeted families with young children. Premier had reached a character licensing agreement with Disney so that they could use Disney characters to lure families on board. Simultaneously, the level of service on The Big Red Boat began to decline, an issue that caused Disney concern over their association with this company, which ultimately led to the dissolution of the partnership. In 1993, Disney began plans to create its own fleet of ships and formally terminated their agreement with Premier. Premier attempted to save the line, first by replacing Disney characters with Looney Tunes characters and then by diversifying their destinations to try to capture the European cruise market.

The decision to sell the vessels for scrap may have been driven by economic factors or a need for more modern and efficient cruise ships, but for fans of the big red behemoths, their loss will forever remain a heart-wrenching tragedy. Australian-owned Orion Expedition Cruises was founded in 2004 by businesswoman Sarina Bratton and began operations in March 2005. Its namesake ship was MV Orion, from which it operated Australia-based expedition cruises mostly to Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands and along Australia's Western Kimberley coast, but it also went as far afield as the Antarctic. Orion added a second ship, Orion II, in May 2011 after a $19 million refurbishment.

While it operated, Fathom alternated weekly between Dominican Republic voluntourism sailings and Cuba people-to-people sailings.
